Does the Beachtek make a lot of difference? I have used the Sehnheiser shotgun mic just straight to the camera and I was not impressed by the sound quality(a lot of background his and the highs and lows were empty).

Yeah, the Beachtek adapter is great. Two XLR inputs (one for the left & right channel) with independent volume control. The biggest advantage is being able to adjust the mic level without touching the camera settings. I use the same adapter with wireless lav mics when shooting interviews and performance is awesome.

I've been using Beachtek adapters since I had my first Sony TRV-900 handicam :)

do you use that same setup shooting handheld? id like to know if its workable that way (mainly if the manfrotto 293 still manages to support the lense) and if so, how you hold it.
