You could make one...

I could send you the list of parts to make one if you would like... It is quite cheap and works well. It isn't a marvel to look at, but the end result is what counts, right? You can check out the pics of the one I built in the "rigs" section.

I have actually tried the follow focus from Cine City and it's fairly nice. No problems. i can get them for whole sale. if there is enough interest I will stock it.

Is it as good or better than the indifocus? I've been looking at that one. I have the indirails system so I know the company makes good stuff, but if the cine city one is actually good quality I might be interest.

That would be cool if you could Tracy, I really want a Follow Focus, and the cine-city's one looks great

Could someone explain to me why follow focus gear is so expensive? seems like a couple of gears and a bracket to sit on 2 rails seems weird costing around $800+ (I was looking at Cavision). The Cine City stuff I wouldn't trust much but I guess its the cheapest alternative.

I could get a killer SLR lens for that same price. Am I missing something that I can't see where the cost goes into?

I agree Pete, I have not looked into the material and labor cost yet, but I am guessing $150 tops to make one at a professional quality level.

Sometimes I wish I had a garage with some equipment to see how to make one, thats why its hard to know how much it really costs.

But if you are going to try it out would love to know, surely there is something about these FF gear that makes it so expensive.

I think it is mostly because the gears that are made are very proprietary to a follow focus system. It's hard to just put one together and make it look professional. So I guess this is one of those cases where value = retail price.
