Rails for the RNG35

Postby leetraceyj on Mon Apr 14, 2008 4:27 pm

A lot of people ask about what rails to get to support the RNG35. Until we can get our own rail system up for sale, these are a very good alternative:

Rails for RNG35 and Flip Device?

Postby SolitarySteve on Thu Jun 12, 2008 9:30 pm

I just bought the RNG35 to be paired with the cinevate flip device, and was curious if the rails suggested here would be optimal for the flip setup as well? Or is there another rail set that would be better for the rng35+cinevate flip module?

I don't use a flip setup, and I won't be receiving my rails until Monday, and my RNG until maybe Friday but I can suggest the IndiRailsproXV from indifocus. They have rails with a riser plate which should bring the camera up high enough to allow for the flip module.

If I understand the question correctly any rail system should work since there is an industry standard diameter (15mm) for an individual rail/rod and standard distance (60mm) between each rail/rod which allow accessories adhering to that standard to play well with each other.

Rails do come in different lengths though and that amount depends on the camera you are using and the size of the gear you intend to use. I intend to use a professional Panasonic P2 ENG camera with the RNG35 and a large matte box system so I will need very long rails to accommodate not only that equipment but also the long Fujinon lens attached to the P2 that will go between the camera and the DOF adapter.

I won't be using a flip module since I have a field monitor which handles the flipping and mirroring electronically. But I think that even if you had a riser for the camera on a rail system that a flip module can go "snorkel up" and still behave fine. But there is the weight issue of the adapter, flip module and lens attached to the thin plastic threads hanging on for dear life.

All things to be considered.
