XH-A1 with RNG V3.1

Postby Bluesmudge on Fri Feb 06, 2009 11:01 pm

I recently modified my rig. I am finally happy with it so I decided to flaunt it.
Canon XH-A1 with a 50mm Nikon E series 1.8 (Don't worry its not my only lens). The rails are DIY oak rods sanded to size and painted black. I couldn't afford another set of carbon fiber rails -- these were a few dollars.

The hand grips, plates, shoulder mount and adapter support all come from Indifocus.com. Everything but the adapter support is included with 24" carbon fiber rails in one of the packages they sell.

The monitor is a diy POS i made for ~$50. I can focus in a pinch, but most importantly it has correct image orientation. Its mounted on a Noga Cine Arm that is worth more than the monitor itself.

Microphone is the honorable Audio Technica AT897. No tripod in the picture because my O'connor head needs some serious repairs.

Thanks for looking. Comments are appreciated :P

That looks like a sweet setup! Do you have an internal battery for the LCD? I actually just bought some rails and a follow focus from indifocus, but I am still struggling to find a good RNG to rails mount. I am almost ready to try to make my own since there doesn't seem to be a really easy way to mount to the smooth body of the adapter. You said you got the adapter mount and indifocus?

Yeah, the DIY monitor is 12v so its running off 8 AA rechargeable batteries which gives it about 2 and a half hours of constant run time. I need to add 2 more batteries I think because rechargables are only 1.2v which means I'm only putting out 10V. I think the 2 more batteries would add more than their capacity to the battery life.

The RNG support is from indifocus, but it is not on the website, I asked Tim if he had something that would work about 6 months ago when I ordered my rails and he said they used to sell this thing. If I remember correctly I got it for free or discounted because I was buying the most expensive rail setup, he just threw it in. I'm not sure if he still makes them, it might have been surplus at the time but its real nice -- height adjustable and then rubber coated cable secured the RNG to the support. Makes for a very solid rig.

How do you like the follow focus? I'm considering getting one eventually. Which package did you get?

Thats cool. I am also using a re-purposed monitor, but I found that the low resolution makes it very difficult to use for anything besides framing. Not to downplay framing, mind you...

I like the follow focus much more than my old homemade one! Everything seems very clean and solid. The gearbox is quite tight as well. It could just be me, but I noticed that the grip is somewhat crooked on mine making the marking disc wobble slightly as you turn it. It isn't a huge deal, but it seems that the pivot rod for that isn't quite as stout as it should be. I debated getting the expensive shoulder rig, but I think I am going to still try to make that.
