RNG35 + HV30 + Nikon 50mm

Hi,

I'm having diffulculty setting up my RNG35.
I can't zoom in far enough on the HV30 while maintaining focus to avoid the shake lines created by the edge of the vibrating ground glass.
Once I zoom in past the black edges there is a very small window left where I can still get focus on the ground glass before the whole frame will be blurry and impossible to focus. Unfortunately it's not far enough to be clear of the bright edge streaks created by the vibrating ground glass.
Are there any solutions to this?

DO you have the Achromat attached? I will have to test this out. i also have the HV30 and t seems like there is plenty of room to zoom past. I will post results.

Yes I have the achromat attached.
I can zoom past it but it becomes impossible to focus on the ground glass, the frame is just blurry past a certain point regardless of the focus settings on both the HV30 and the Nikon Lens.

Sometimes I get a focusing issue with the HV30, then I back it up, and mess with the focus wheel (if you can call it that) then I am able to focus farther. You could also try a spacer ring. E-mail us directly and we may have a different solution for you.

Hi tracey,

I'm off to work now but I will send you an email later. Here is a copy of my reply on the HV20 forums. Hope this makes more sense and you can see what I'm talking about.

Hi, I did more tests yesterday with the adapter both inside and outside and the problem remains. Seems once I zoom in past a certain point from wide to telephoto it's impossible to focus properly on the ground glass, seems to be beyond the focus ability of the HV30. Without the adapter the camera focuses fine wide to telephoto. It can focus solidly on the gg up until that point.

I've put a video up on Vimeo, it's probably best to download the original and up your monitor brightness a bit to see the artifacts, it's pretty evident in the original 1080i footage that the focus is out once you zoom in past the edge artifacts.

I was monitoring the video both with the HV30's lcd (peaking on) and via firewire in vegas to see the full frame. Even on the HV30's screen I can see that I'm losing the ability to focus past a certain point. I think the length of the adapter is in fact the problem with my camera :hv20-smilie51:

anyway here is the link http://www.vimeo.com/1078996

I think we will be implementing a different ahcromat with the HV20 and HV30 eventually. For some reason the HV20 and 30 react differently with the large 72mm achromats we are using. We tried a smaller one and you could almost zoom in as far as you wanted. Update will come soon.
